Japanese Car Auction Houses (USS, TAA, JU & More) - Guide for Bangladesh 2026

A Japanese car auction house is a wholesale marketplace where licensed Japanese dealers bid on used vehicles, each backed by an inspection sheet. The biggest names are USS, JU, TAA, AUCNET, ARAI and Bay Auc. Bangladeshi buyers cannot join these auctions directly. You buy through a Japanese exporter or auction agent who bids for you, then ship the car to Chattogram or Mongla and clear it through Bangladesh customs.

What is a Japanese car auction house?

Japanese auction houses are dealer-only wholesale venues. Sellers send cars in, the auction house inspects each one and issues an auction sheet with a grade, mileage and condition notes, and dealers then bid on it, on site, by satellite terminal or online.

For Bangladesh, this matters because most reconditioned cars sold in Dhaka and Chattogram started life in one of these auctions. The sheet is the closest thing to an independent condition report you will see, which is why buyers, dealers and verification services all focus on it.

How many auction houses are there in Japan?

There is no single auction. One industry source counts about 123 used-car auctions in Japan, split between independent groups (USS dominates) and manufacturer-run houses (Toyota's TAA leads). In practice most export volume flows through a smaller set of major houses.

  • Independent groups: USS, JU, ARAI, Bay Auc, JAA, CAA, AUCNET
  • Manufacturer-linked: TAA (Toyota), Honda Auto Auction

Top 10 Japanese car auction houses

The ranking below reflects scale, export relevance and how often each house comes up in exporter guides. It is an editorial judgement, not an official league table. Figures are as reported by exporters and may change.

1. USS (Used car System Solutions)

  • Who they are: Japan's largest used-car auction group, founded in 1980, with over 30% market share.
  • Scale: 19 physical auction sites, with weekly sales running on different days across the country.
  • How you bid: on site, by dedicated terminal, or online through the Internet Live service.
  • Strengths: the widest selection and the 10-point grading system exporters know best.
  • Watch out for: membership is strict, so only registered dealers get in. Popularity can lift prices slightly, and quick inspections can mean less detail per car.
  • Best for Bangladesh: everyday Toyota and Honda models in volume. Almost every exporter searches USS first.

2. JU Auto Auction

  • Who they are: a network of semi-independent auctions under the Japan Used Car Dealers Association umbrella.
  • Scale: 23 venues, over 10,000 dealers and about 27,000 vehicles a week.
  • Strengths: broad regional supply and detailed inspections, with damage history noted on the sheet. It is approved by two Japanese ministries (Land, Infrastructure and Transport; Economy, Trade and Industry).
  • Watch out for: no single unified catalogue, so an exporter has to search venue by venue.
  • Best for Bangladesh: buyers hunting a specific model, because stock is spread across many regions.

3. TAA (Toyota Auto Auction)

  • Who they are: Toyota's own auction group, established in 1967 and often called the oldest auction group.
  • Scale and schedule: auctions run mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with some sites on Saturdays. Exporters disagree on the venue count (10 on one site, 16 on another), so confirm before publishing.
  • Strengths: strict quality control and strong Toyota and Lexus supply, plus other domestic and imported cars, commercial vehicles and forklifts.
  • Watch out for: stock is split between venues with no unified catalogue.
  • Best for Bangladesh: Toyota-heavy demand such as Axio, Allion, Premio, Noah and Fielder.

4. AUCNET

  • Who they are: an all-online and satellite auction with no physical hall, and over 30 years of history.
  • Scale and schedule: about 7,000 dealers; a weekly auction on Mondays with 100,000+ cars listed, according to exporter guides.
  • Strengths: large unified catalogue, access to many other auctions through one system, fixed-price stock and payment deferral for members.
  • Watch out for: you cannot physically inspect cars beforehand, and it only sells on Mondays.
  • Best for Bangladesh: exporters who want one searchable catalogue. Because it is less popular than USS, prices can sometimes be lower.

5. HAA Kobe

  • Who they are: an auction in Kobe, Hyogo, now part of the USS group.
  • Scale and schedule: Saturdays, with over 11,000 vehicles a week.
  • How you bid: on site, online or by broadcast.
  • Strengths: a large single-venue catalogue and an established reputation.
  • Watch out for: competitive bidding and one hall only.
  • Best for Bangladesh: weekend sourcing when other houses are closed. It sits near Kobe port, a major export gateway.

6. ARAI Auto Auction

  • Who they are: a group founded in 1987.
  • Scale and schedule: passenger-car auctions on Tuesday (Sendai), Thursday (Oyama) and Friday (Bayside), plus a commercial vehicle sale on Saturday at Oyama.
  • Strengths: vans, trucks, motorcycles and machinery alongside cars, with a reputation for strict inspections.
  • Watch out for: a smaller overall catalogue than USS or JU.
  • Best for Bangladesh: commercial buyers looking for vans and pickups.

7. Bay Auc

  • Who they are: an Osaka-based house, once known as Osaka Nanko, that is described as a pioneer of fully online automotive auctions.
  • Scale and schedule: Wednesdays, with about 2,000 cars per sale gathered from roughly 8,500 companies.
  • Strengths: trained inspectors, a covered facility that protects stock, and a reputation for well-kept cars.
  • Watch out for: a small catalogue and a single location.
  • Best for Bangladesh: buyers who value condition over choice.

8. JAA (Japan Auto Auction)

  • Who they are: a medium-sized house founded in 1998 under the Ashiya Chamber of Commerce.
  • Scale: nearly 45,000 vehicles sold a month.
  • Strengths: a dependable selection of quality used cars with a solid track record.
  • Watch out for: not a specialist in commercial vehicles.
  • Best for Bangladesh: a useful second source when USS or TAA stock is thin.

9. Honda Auto Auction

  • Who they are: Honda's auction, established in 1992, with online bidding from the start.
  • Schedule: Mondays, run simultaneously at six locations nationwide.
  • Strengths: all venues follow the same standards, and members can bid in real time from anywhere in the country.
  • Watch out for: supply is linked to Honda dealers, so choice outside Honda is narrower.
  • Best for Bangladesh: buyers looking for Honda models such as the Fit.

10. CAA

  • Who they are: a regional auction group with four venues.
  • Strengths: a strong code of conduct and the TC-webΣ online service, which opens bidding at over 80 locations.
  • Watch out for: smaller scale than the top houses.
  • Best for Bangladesh: a complement to USS and TAA when an exporter is filling a container or shipment.

Quick pick guide for Bangladeshi buyers

  • Want maximum choice? USS and JU.
  • Want a Toyota? TAA, then USS.
  • Want a van or pickup? ARAI and JU.
  • Want condition over variety? Bay Auc.
  • Want an online catalogue? AUCNET.

Whichever house the car comes from, ask your exporter for the auction house name, sale date and original sheet, then verify it by chassis number.

Which auction house is best for Bangladesh?

There is no universal winner. A better question is which house suits the car you want:

  • Toyota hatchbacks and sedans: TAA and USS usually have the deepest supply.
  • Variety and volume: USS and JU.
  • Vans and pickups: ARAI and JU are worth checking.
  • Budget-conscious buyers: compare houses, because prices shift by venue and week.

The biggest house is not automatically the best for every purchase. What matters more is a transparent exporter who shows you the original sheet, the auction house name and the sale date.

How a Bangladeshi buyer actually buys

  1. Choose an exporter or agent. They hold the auction memberships. Ask which houses they search and what they charge.
  2. Set a budget that includes everything. Agree a maximum bid that already covers auction fees and the agent's commission.
  3. Search and shortlist. The agent sends candidate cars with their sheets.
  4. Check the sheet. Get the original Japanese sheet, not just a translation, and verify it by chassis number.
  5. Bid. The agent bids on your behalf. Unsold cars can sometimes be negotiated after the sale.
  6. Pay and collect. After a win, the agent invoices the car, fees, Japanese inland transport and freight.
  7. Export. The car is moved to a Japanese port, deregistered and given an export certificate, and a pre-shipment inspection is arranged where required.
  8. Ship. Most cars travel RoRo, which is usually cheaper than container shipping.
  9. Clear in Bangladesh. Pay duties and taxes, submit the required documents and complete BRTA registration.

How to read an auction sheet

The auction sheet is a one-page inspection report written by the auction house's inspector. It records the grade, interior and exterior condition, mileage and marked defects.

Three cautions:

  • A high grade is not a guarantee. The sheet reflects the car's condition on one day.
  • Inspector notes are in Japanese. Machine translations often get technical terms wrong.
  • Fake or altered sheets exist. Warning signs include a missing or mismatched auction house stamp and details that do not match the car's chassis number.

In Bangladesh, buyers often meet grades through dealer ads that quote an auction point such as R or 3.5 next to the chassis number. Ask for the original sheet and verify it before paying.

Bangladesh rules that affect your choice

  • Age limit: reconditioned cars are limited to 5 years old. The importers' association BARVIDA has asked for 8, so check for changes before you buy. Older guides still quote 4 years.
  • Duty: BARVIDA says reconditioned vehicles pay a minimum of 129% and up to 826% in duties, depending on the vehicle. Get a current figure from your C&F agent.
  • Inspection: a JAAI certificate showing the model, age and chassis number is required by customs.
  • Right-hand drive only.
  • 2026-2029 import policy: the policy order published on 24 August 2026 banned imports of reconditioned or used electric vehicles, which the previous policy allowed. BARVIDA is campaigning for the ban to be lifted. Check the latest status before ordering an EV or hybrid.
  • Market context: BARVIDA reports reconditioned car imports from Japan fell from 21,952 units in 2015 to 9,387 in 2025, while the overall car market is 25,000 to 30,000 units a year.

What does it really cost? A landed-cost checklist

The price you see at auction is only one part. Build your own estimate from these lines:

Fill this table with live quotes from your exporter and C&F agent. Do not rely on fixed percentages from other countries, because Bangladesh duty is very different.

Risks and how to avoid them

  • Altered or fake sheets: verify the original record by chassis number, lot number and auction date.
  • Odometer tampering: check mileage against the auction record and, where possible, an export inspection.
  • Accident or flood history: read the inspector's marks, not just the grade.
  • Unreliable exporters: a trustworthy exporter can tell you the auction house and sale date for any car.
  • Hidden costs: ask for an all-in quote to Chattogram or Mongla before paying.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy directly from USS or TAA from Bangladesh? No. These are dealer-only auctions. You need a Japanese exporter or authorised agent.

Which Japanese auction house is the biggest? USS is generally treated as the largest, with over 30% market share, followed by JU's wide venue network.

What auction grade should I buy? Higher grades usually mean better condition, but always read the actual sheet. A genuine mid-grade car can beat a poorly described high-grade one.

Can I check a car's auction history by chassis number? Yes. A chassis number can be matched to the original auction record, if the car passed through an auction.

What if no auction record exists? The car may have been sold through a Japanese dealer rather than an auction. In that case, other documents such as the Japanese registration certificate may help with mileage.

What is the age limit for importing a car into Bangladesh? Currently 5 years. Industry groups are lobbying to raise it.

Are reconditioned EVs allowed? The 2026-2029 import policy banned them. Confirm the latest position.
